The 80/20 Rule

How many times do you finish the day, look at your To Do List and wonder where did the day go because you feel like you did not accomplish anything? If you find yourself in this predicament frequently, I recommend that you start implementing the 80/20 rule, otherwise known as the Pareto Principle. The rule states, “ 20 percent of your results come from 80 percent of your time.”

Many of us fall into the habit of having our attention taken away from the items that are required of us, give us the greatest return or are the most rewarding. What are we doing instead? In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in distractions. Distractions come in many forms. We could be focused on smaller tasks that do not align with our strength zone or projects that are currently at deadline or we focus on the white noise around us. When we do this, we are stalling our progress.

The good news is this is an easy fix. When you know your strength zone, identify the important items on your To Do List and make sure they fall into alignment of what is required of you, what gives you the greatest return and what is the most rewarding for you. Focus on these items and you will be on the road to success. At the end of the day, you do not need to know everything and as John Maxwell so eloquently states, “ Half of being smart is knowing what you are dumb at.”

Take a moment, review your To Do List and realign those tasks. Anything that does not meet the criteria can be delegated or placed on the side. Focus on the 20% that will give you the greatest return.
